Description
Ancillae-Assumpta has a commitment to learn with iPad to break down the walls of the classroom—and link learning to the outdoors, to the community, and to the world.
The students learn with MacBook Air and iPad to create, publish, connect, communicate, collaborate, research, and problem-solve. A variety of apps— including Keynote, iMovie, Photos, and GarageBand—engage students in personalized, student-centered learning.
To complement the STEM focus in all grades, students use probeware, coding, programming robots, and 3D printers. They also rely on iPad in the school’s STEM laboratory as well as outdoors to explore the natural world, capture and document learning, and compile the data and information.
Students in the Music Tech Ensemble create and perform their musical pieces with help from GarageBand on iPad devices. Each of the eight ensemble members masters an individual instrumental part, then uses iPad to arrange and perform in the student concerts. As part of the school’s music curriculum, all students learn composition and performance on piano and guitar through GarageBand in the iMac equipped MIDI Lab.
The Class of 2016, which first began in the school’s STEM program in 2010 and was the first class to fully participate in the one-to-one program, has shown remarkable growth on standardized tests, demonstrating the impact of the program. Measuring from 3rd to 7th grade, student performance increased 23 points in math, 18 points in science, 20 points in reading, and 23 points in language arts. Both the number of students earning scholarships and the number of scholarships have steadily increased since 2013. An additional advantage is the ability to purchase digital books of the literature for 7th and 8th grades—cutting those costs by 50 percent
